Infrastructure to Decipher the IoT Data Storm

Internet connected devices communicate with each other to better manage the power grid, improve surgical procedures and better automate supply chains.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next frontier of integrated computing. But how smoothly and safely that integration happens remains to be fully seen.

To pick one example, Dell Technologies is recently investing in building its IoT tech. A new division aims to make IoT and edge computing user-friendly and understandable for consumers. But working on the edge must also be friendly to the large-scale IT teams charged with building flexible and reliable IT infrastructures for businesses, e-commerce and information storage.

Right now, Dell’s Virtustream essentially offers consumers private cloud data centers. Liqid knows that the cloud is not enough. It's expensive, and it can be too slow for the lightning pace of IoT. Government institutions and businesses of all kinds need to be able to right-size their tech, with some data centers onsite and some computing done locally in order to handle the sheer volume of data efficiently and with the greatest amount of real-time accuracy.

Composable is the clear answer to this dilemma, and it's why we’re leading the industry in that area. For us, composable is not a single division. It's our movement, coming into its own as traditional commercial computing structures give way to disaggregated systems that can be scaled and deployed more granularly from wherever data flows.

Analysts say that the huge data load generated by IoT is already impacting organizations' spending on infrastructure. A third are planning for upgrades in storage, server infrastructure and cloud space. 65% will increase their spending in the next year.

Onsite datacenters are still most popular with companies, but as IoT becomes an expectation for businesses, cloud-only solutions will prove to be less competitive in the market. It is estimated that IoT will save businesses more than $1 trillion a year in maintenance by just 2022. Corporations need to be ready with composable infrastructure to reap and pass on those benefits to investors, customers and their own workforces. The market will be looking for experience in this arena, and find it in Liqid.
